Clean, Fed and Nurtured (CFN)

While adequate WASH and nutrition in the first two years is critical to prevent stunting, research also points to the important role of early childhood development (ECD), including early childhood stimulation, to support brain development and to strengthen the impact of nutrition interventions. The experts have previously worked on two-way integration. WASH and nutrition sectors are actively collaborating. Likewise, ECD and nutrition researchers are pioneering integrated interventions in nutrition and child development (the finishing touches are currently being made on a special issue of Annals of New York Academy of Sciences highlighting this integration). But rarely do programs or studies put a focus on all three sectors. A new mulit-sectoral initiative called Clean, Fed & Nurtured supports a shift in the ways we promote child growth and child development.

On May 2-3, 2013, Alive & Thrive, FHI 360, the Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing, Save the Children, USAID and WASHplus, brought together experts from water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), nutrition, and early childhood development (ECD)  in an effort to join forces to promote child growth and development.
