Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)

In Mali, WASHplus-trained relais (community health workers) identify opportunities for behavior change promotion in the areas of hygiene and sanitation and conduct nutrition screening, referrals, and demonstrations that also incorporate WASH messages.

The WASHplus integrated WASH/nutrition initiative in Mali targets 187,000 women of reproductive age and approximately 60,000 of their children, aged 0–59 months in three districts with high rates of stunting in the Mopti Region. One of the project’s objectives is to increase demand for low-cost sanitation among rural households and communities. WASHplus employs the community-led total sanitation (CLTS) approach to ignite villages to collectively abandon open defecation and empowers household investment in environmentally appropriate low cost latrine models.

WASHplus and Peace Corps/Benin have teamed up to produce a set of training and job aids for Peace Corps Volunteers and their counterparts.  Eventually, Peace Corps/Benin would like all volunteers serving in Benin to have some WASH training to integrate WASH into whatever their primary program focus is – education, health, environment.

An example of how WASHplus and its local implementing parter WaterAid are working in targeted, hard-to-reach, marginalized communities in Bangladesh to improve sanitation status not only by promoting fixed point defecation but also by gradually moving households up the sanitation ladder toward more hygienic feces management.

This report summarizes the findings of a baseline survey conducted to support the implementation of a three-year WASHplus project designed to address the underlying causes of inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) conditions in hard-to-reach areas of southwestern Bangladesh.

The WASHplus activity aims to increase the consistent and correct practice of a suite of WASH behaviors in order to see related improvements in child growth and overall household resiliency and health.
