WASHplus continues pioneering work developing a menu of small doable actions for the safe disposal of infant feces. Working with program partners, the project team further refined doable behaviors for four cohorts of infant and young children, and worked with designers to develop a set of job aids to integrate Essential WASH Actions into Feed the Future nutrition implementing partner work.

Over the past few months, WASHplus through implementing partner ABMS/PSI has stepped up advocacy for latrine improvement in several public schools. One school, with a student population of 1,500, has four latrine blocks that are unusable because they are full. Even though WASHplus/ABMS and school officials successfully lobbied the Ministry of Education for a $200 line item for pit emptying, the urgency of the situation prompted the PTA to front the money and hire a pit empying service soon thereafter.

The 2016 ETHOS Conference was held in Kirkland, Washington from Friday January 29th – Sunday January 31st, 2016. The conference aims to expand its reach from previous annual meetings, encouraging participation of Southern partners, international stoves experts, and development specialists with field experience in the transfer of cooking technologies.

This publication, jointly prepared by WHO, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), summarizes the current evidence on the benefits of WASH for improving nutrition outcomes and describes how WASH interventions can be integrated into nutrition programmes. It provides practical suggestions, targeted at nutrition programme managers and implementers, on both “what” WASH interventions should be included in nutrition programmes and “how” to include them.

This guide introduces the basic concepts and tools of market research and provides readers with best practices and tips in the design and management of market research in the clean cooking sector. It was created by the Alliance in collaboration with WASHplus as a resource for cookstove and fuel manufacturers, distributors, entrepreneurs, donors, NGOs and other organizations in the clean cooking sector to support them in using market research to uncover consumer insights critical to success in the design and marketing of clean cooking solutions.

The objectives for this study were to measure the degree of pupils’ dehydration in this setting, the effect of drinking water on cognitive test performance, and the effect of hydration on cognitive test performance.

Handwashing with soap is a highly effective method for reducing the risk of diarrheal disease, yet interventions to alter this behavior often fail or achieve only short-term success. In this paper, we propose that the science of habit can partly explain the challenge of handwashing behavior change. Integrating basic science insights from psychology, cognitive science, and behavior change research, we propose six principles for creating greater initiation and maintenance of handwashing change.
